Date nights are a big deal around here. Not necessarily in what the date is, but in that we make a special point to have one at least once a week especially this time of year. Wedding season & portrait sessions keep me occupied most weekends from late Spring to Fall. Kevin’s schedule can either be nights or days, add in working special events, extracurricular activities, volunteer work & the farm…we are booked solid. In the event that we both have a weekend off we usually just want to veg on the couch, watching Pirates or Potter marathons, falling asleep much earlier than I would like to admit. But date nights are different – they are our way to disconnect from the work world, shut down the phones, t.v. and every other distraction out there, put the to-do list away and just be together. Enjoying each others company, connecting, communicating, being silly, trying new things, having new experiences & making memories. So date nights are a big deal around here. Because of this crazy time of year, date nights don’t happen on the weekends – we do them during the week!
Sometimes it’s going out to our favorite sushi bar where they know us by name & pretty much our order, taking in a matinee, hitting the farmer’s market, hanging at a local coffee shop or going to a concert. We both really like trying different restaurants & activities. Date nights always involve great food, in fact they are often centered around it. Othertimes we bring date night inside, choosing a theme. We will fix a new meal together, play board games, dance in the living room, challenge each other to a game of Super Mario or Angry Birds, play hide & go seek (more like hide & run) with Sammy & Leo. I’m sure it sounds silly with a touch of old couple, but it’s totally us.
This weeks date night was all about Harry Potter & the Brits. We made a shepherd’s pie so good that we fixed it again the next night! Add in some homemade butterbeer & finish it off with butterbeer cupcakes (thanks to recipes off Pinterest that I improvised), pop in the Order of the Phoenix, speak in your best British accent the whole time and it was a good night!
